the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life, but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound, for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.

next up on our album manoeuvres we head back up to sheffield. hiem are back with their 3rd album, the galactic cornucopia that is hotspace. it is a fine follow up to the 2013 escape from division street released here on nang. hiem consist of dynamic duo of nick eastwood & bozzwell (he was the live vocalist for -the all seeing i- who scored a worldwide hit with the beat goes on in 1998). we have always thought of hiem as one part grown-up dance pop, one part fine 80 s tinged songs and one part slightly weird and quirky. the third album doesn t disappoint managing to cram all those descriptions (and more) across ten fine songs.

younger rebinds is a new project and imaginary band by the inimitable and unstoppable benny rodrigues. maybe best-known for his rod moniker and releases on klockworks, rodrigues embodies and keeps the candour, spirit and curiosity that made techno music stand out in its start-up years - and that s exactly what we have here. the -retro 7 ep- makes the most of the classic 707 drum machine, gnarly synths, ambient soundscapes, pianos and organs. done in a way that is as much new wave, as it is electronic disco. spread out over a double-pack with eight tracks (8!, get it?), the younger rebinds hit the sweet spot between vintage dj hell aesthetics, sterac electronics and trevor jackson s metal dance dogma, if its choir would be muted. loud pressing and hypnotic artwork included. please don t look at it for more than 5 minutes.

following on from his intimate entry into the dj-kicks mix series, lone is putting out a vinyl only ep of all the unreleased tracks from it. the horizontal mix tapped into all of lones influences, from hip-hop to house, idm to techno. it also showcased some producers signed to his own magic wire label, and of course the back bone was built from some of the nottingham mans freshest new productions. they come after celebrated releases on werk discs, r&s and dekmantel, and include dance floor aligned eps and more rounded full lengths designed for close listening. here he sits in between the two across three thrilling cuts. opener ‘saturday night is a breezy bit of deep house with crisp boom-baps and swirling pads that lend it a dreamy, ethereal feel. spoken word snippets are stitched into the groove and the whole thing is as frictionless and feel good as house comes. next up, ‘arc is a little more direct, with scattered snares flapping over dry wooden kicks. its a punchy bit of house latest dj-kicks mix star kerri chandler would be proud, and comes overlaid with spring time flutes and luscious pads as a classically inclined bassline powers things along. last but not least is ‘alpha wheel 4 (ambient mix), a kaleidoscopic passage of suspensory sound scuffed up glassy surfaces trapping you in rays of refracted light from start to finish. all three tracks exhibit lones authentic, lived in and lo-fi aesthetic, and as a result slip perfectly into his ever more essential discography.

recorded in new york’s avatar studios in may 2017 and produced by manfred eicher, blue maqams brings tunisian oud master anouar brahem together with three brilliant improvisers. for anouar brahem and dave holland the album marks a reunion: they first collaborated 20 years ago on the very widely-acclaimed thimar album. brahem meets jack dejohnette for the first time here, but holland and dejohnette have been frequent musical partners over the last half-century beginning with ground-breaking work with miles davis – their collaborations are legendary. british pianist django bates also rises superbly to the challenge of brahem’s compositions. and anouar in turn is inspired to some of his most outgoing playing. blue maqams is a highlight of ecm’s autumn season.

dokutoku records is here with its first release from label boss katie drover. scenario name is an elegant and moody number with a heart of jazz. the original has been artfully remixed by cesar merveille who has constructed an 11 and a half minute groover with twists and turns that will move the after hours.

say what you wanna say, but you have to give strahil velchev this: the manÆs a powerhouse. recording and playing live under the kink alias, he went on to become one of finest purveyorÆs of funk in techno and house. what it is, by definition, ainÆt exactly clear. and that is the beauty of it. kinkÆs music is unifying in the best possible way. channeling the spirit and feeling of a time where it didnÆt really matter who the faces behind the music were, kink plays with the elements of genres and sub-genres as if the future of it all is still wide-open. at the same time it could be accused of retro-fetishism, as much as the pope himself is infallible. the pure need to recreate moments, feelings and experience - rather than carbon copies of existing designs - was what started kinkÆs production work. hailing from bulgaria, it was nearly impossible to get your hands on all the records and music that fed into a system of raves, clubs and record shops that seemed far away from sofia, and financially it might as well have meant another galaxy. wanting to dj without having access to the tracks that spun the carousel meant that you had to create them yourselves. so, here we go with a private bootlegger gone public mastermind and one of the loudest voices in house, techno and beyond. from kinkÆs early productions with neville watson to his smash-hit for ovum, a cerebral album for macro, tons of remixes & tracks and his mind-bending live act, playground seems to take all that into a blender. simultaneously a sound-summary, the harvest of a field of ideas, and the exhibition of an artist in his prime, it also works as a sort of kink dictionary: avant-garde soundscapes stand next to boisterous bangers, classic club tracks and peak time emotions

swiss pair domo are back on their own framework label with another fine ep featuring two fresh and inventive cuts.
this well established swiss duo have already served up the first two eps on this label proving they have a sound that mixes up classic detroit and berlin sounds with their own vivid imaginations and a love of tech house. they also work as live performers who focus on spontaneity, and that certainly shows here.

“i’ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.

to make it true and organic was the main purpose when german producer filou started his work for nova 118 ep. both original tracks, radon and scandium represent the path of techno with house influences. the tracks are rich in details and short fills which makes this a truly outstanding record. as this isn’t enough filou presents two versions of -radon- and -scandium- demonstrating where techno and house can take you. as the original concentrates on a percussive rhythm, samuel l. session’s version is arranged more classically -- a deep chord, a clear beat, accentuated hi-hats and claps. the -justin berkovi remix- carefully-placed sounds building the track into a dynamic and hypnotic whole. the percussiveness here is more profound, shaping the track in a completely different way. already massive plays by a bunch of dj-s incl. villalobos.

swedes are known to have big confidence in authorities and conventions. among the people living in sweden, who take a stand against the above is one of the country’s most creative producers and musicians, jocke ahlund (teddybears sthlm, les big byrd, caesars etc.). under the pseudonym max von sydow his creativity shines brightly and here is some long awaited new material released on a 7inch on hoga nord rekords.

moon harbour are delighted to welcome a huge summer signing for their next ep: foremost uk producer huxley turns out three club rocking tunes that all make the big impressions he is known for.
over the last decade, huxley has produced a number of huge hits that fuse myriad four four styles into exciting and arresting new forms. his diverse lp from 2014 showed off a range of styles from peak time to downtempo to jungle and came on aus, while other labels like hypercolour have also showcased his ever subtly evolving style. here he is in fine form once more.

hrow the hands into the air: kornel kovacs, on the go dj and producer from stockholm, who runs with his mates axel boman and petter nordkvist the label studio barnhus, delivers his debut ep on endless flight. its a 10inch, its juicy and enlarged with super happy emotions. two sample house bangers that came to life only for one reason: to make people smile. the a-side tune szamar twists with twisted rhythms, samples and disco sounds. the b-side features a remix of the tune order to the sense by the new zealand/german duo snacks. it was originally featured on the i m starting to feel okay volume 7 compilation on mule musiq. kornél kovacs transformed it into a melancholic house anthem full of with highlife guitar riffs and smiling horn sounds. high spirits music for all circumstances of a party night. if you look for music that gives you joy: kornel kovacs brings it here in a pure human panache.

the patrick adams managed group black ivory scored a number of hits in the mid 70s, two of their most sought after are here together on one 12inch. the paradise garage and loft anthem mainline, penned by prolific disco producer leroy burgess has seen it s fair share of bootlegs but it s available here officially licensed and remastered for the first time since it s original release in 1976. fans of ron hardy may be familiar with the break from the b side cut walking downtown on saturday night as it feature heavily in his sets from the legendary music box in chicago. presented on heavyweight 180g vinyl.

danse club followers will know lauhaus has been with the label since their early days when he joined the imprint with his remix of kalisha - “i got something here”. he now comes through with “smoke screen”, a 3 track vinyl only ep and his 5th ep for danse club. it’s all house and techno.

avant-punk trio, toresch, return with a 4 track ep for düsseldorf’s, offen. following on and loosening up (possibly the result of live performances?). together, toresch, conjour up a rare spirit which lives in their sound and shapes their movement. huge love for this crew here!

dana ruh’s brouqade has long been renowned for its many eclectic and unpredictable sounds. in that essence, the label’s latest signing is a fitting fit. kamran sadeghi is an nyc based electronic music producer who is well versed in unconventional soundscapes. as likely to release an electronic music ep as he is turn his hand to film scores or more ambient textures, sadeghi has collaborated with everyone from patti smith to berlin club, berghain. a live artist of considerable depth and panache, his signing to brouqade marks another high point in the label’s story.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

satori returns to crosstown rebels with his atmospheric album maktub. here is a four track vinyl sampler from the album, including a live unreleased vinyl only version of ‘while i miss you’.
music flows through the veins of satori. no ordinary artist, he is creating deeply spiritual music through a range of instruments and production techniques. maktub, his debut album on the illustrious crosstown rebels pulls the listener into an exotic world, blurring the lines between electronic and meditative music.
at the core of maktub is satori’s desire to touch people with his music, and his vocals shine through from start to finish, as he guides the listener on an arabian nights inspired journey.
after the success of ‘imanis’ dress’ and ‘umama’ singles, satori’s album is a work of sonic beauty. this four track sampler features four diverse cuts from the album that will each beguil, inspire and enthrall.

leuk en ko is the dutch bastard child by unit moebius members jan duivenvoorden and richard van den bogaert. creating a vault of hard to classify material from mid eighties until early nineties, it didn t get out there for whatever reason. after de snoei 1 appeared on world of rubber 3, the big follow-up is here.

pre-echo press is pleased to announce beast, a new project & moniker from acclaimed sound/visual artist, koen holtkamp (mountains, thrill jockey). a somewhat radical departure from holtkamp’s previous working modes where sound has typically been treated as an edifice to be sculpted, the works here are far more concerned with the generative possibilities of rhythm. the pieces on beast developed out of holtkamp’s creation last year of an audio-visual performance that centers on the physical properties of light via 3d laser projections.

delsin records inertia series is back with a powerful four tracker from yan cook. the producer from ukraine has also released delsin s main label and associated ann aimee, as well as planet rhythm and cooked. he makes straight up techno that arrests your attention and does just that again here. toucan is first and is a spangled, underwater techno track with gurgling lines wrapping round shuffling percussion and insistent drums. it s one to get into your head, while puffin is more physical, with more warped synths and paddy drums woven together into a fluid, rippling groove that never lets up. the drums on dialogue are deep and land with real resonance while dubby chords rattling out to the horizon. last of all flamingo is the most manic of the lot, with hi speed synths and booming drums all coming together to make for powerful, sub shaking and room filling techno madness.

1997. drexciya dont have no phone. theyre too busy to do your remix. mad mikes response was short and to the point, enough to put off some, but not vincent koreman. addicted from an early age, the dutch producer dug deeper and deeper into the mythology and mystery of james stinson and gerald donald. the sounds, images and ideas conjured up by the detroit electro duo pulled koreman in, his fascination growing ever more intense as the underwater dwellers sonically prospered. fast forward twenty years and that fascination has not diluted one drop, in fact the aquatic dream of the wavejumpers is the inspiration for recolonization. these tracks would have never had existed, says koreman, if it wasnt for stinson and donald creating that great, energetic, abstract electronic music and coupled it with an original vision on the african diaspora, art and culture. this music is an homage to th e enigma of drexciya, a tribute to the machine marine men who pioneered electro and a vision. drvg cvltvre continues that vision, one of an underwater race that has reconquered earth, overcoming big business, corporate greed and water pollution to reclaim the surface from man. forget mankind. our time is over, recolonization is here.

pre-echo press is pleased to announce beast, a new project & moniker from acclaimed sound/visual artist, koen holtkamp (mountains, thrill jockey). a somewhat radical departure from holtkamp’s previous working modes where sound has typically been treated as an edifice to be sculpted, the works here are far more concerned with the generative possibilities of rhythm. the pieces on beast developed out of holtkamp’s creation last year of an audio-visual performance that centers on the physical properties of light via 3d laser projections.
